The Shepherd and the Runaway Wolf

A wolf fleeing a hunter met a shepherd.
"Help me!" he shouted. "I swear I'm innocent!"
"I'll help you," said the shepherd.
He showed the wolf where to hide.
Moments later, the hunter arrived. "Have you seen a wolf?"
The shepherd shouted, "He went that way, to the left." But with his eyes he indicated the wolf's hiding place.
The hunter didn't notice, though, and ran to the left.
"Will you thank me for hiding you?" asked the shepherd.
"I'll thank your mouth," the wolf replied, "but not your eyes. Someday you'll notice your flock is smaller; that's my thanks."

Inspired byMille Fabulae et Una, a collection of Latin fables that I've edited, free to read online. I am not translating the Latin here; instead, I am just telling a 100-word version of the fable.
Notes: This is fable 83 in the book, which is Perry 22.
