196. Birbal's Magical Sticks

Someone was robbing the imperial kitchen, but the steward didn't know who. "Help me, Birbal!" he pleaded.
Birbal gathered some sticks and then addressed the kitchen staff. "These are my magical detecting sticks; each is the same length." He gave each person a stick. "Put this under your pillow tonight. The thief's greedy thoughts will make his stick grow longer."
The next morning, the staff presented their sticks.
One stick was much shorter than the rest!
"Behold the thief, who cut his stick to make it shorter," proclaimed Birbal. "By trying to prove his innocence, he has revealed his guilt."

Inspired byA Caravan from Hindustan: The Complete Birbal Tales by James Moseley
Notes: This story is titled "The Thief's Stick" in the book. In that version, Birbal is helping a local merchant, but I relocated the story to the imperial kitchens.

    1. Most of the Birbal stories are too long for these 100-word versions, but if there is a Birbal story you think would work well in 100 words that I have not done already, let me know!

    2. heres a 100 word variation Akbar had a courtier named Sultan. Sultan wanted his son to become the royal treasurer. Akbar and Birbal did not want this as his son was rogue. one day,Birbal was late. Sultan said ''Birbal has become lazy. Say no to everything he says.'' Birbal came and said ''Majesty,my wife was ill.'' Akbar said ''NO.'' Birbal was confused. he wanted to know why akbar was saying this. Birbal said ''May we discuss work.''Akbar said ''NO.'' Birbal asked may I leave.'' Akbar said ''no.'' Birbal realised what was going on. he asked ''will you appoint sultan's son.'' AKBAR SAID ''no.''
