Becoming What You Pretend to Be

There was a man who was deeply in debt. He could not see any way of paying off his debts, so he decided to pretend to be insane. Physicians were summoned; none were able to cure him of his madness. Indeed, the more the physicians did, the worse the madness became.
A wise physician finally realized what the man was doing. "Beware," he told the man. "Pretending to be insane like this could make you lose your mind for real."
The man realized the truth of the physician's words. He set aside the play-acting and prepared himself to face reality.
