Gazelle moved in with Monkey.
When Gazelle grew thirsty, she said, "What can I drink here?"
Monkey led her to a hole in the rock where rain accumulated. "There's some water."
"Ugh!" said Gazelle. "I can't drink that."
Monkey led her to a bubbling spring.
"Ugh!" Gazelle said again. "I need to drink air. Fresh breezes! The wind! Let's leave this valley and go to the plains."
Monkey went with Gazelle. "Drink in the air!" she said.
But the plains were so hot and dry that Monkey died of thirst there.
Each creature must find their own way of living.
Inspired by: "The Tale of the Ape and the Gazel" in Tales, Customs, Names, and Dirges of the Tigre Tribes by Enno Littmann, 1915.
Notes: You can read the original story online. There are no apes in Ethiopia, but there are a variety of monkeys, so I changed the story to be about a monkey and gazelle.
