Long ago, King Kuru yoked the bull of Shiva to his plow, together with the buffalo of Yama, and thus he used their divine power to turn over the soil. As he plowed, Kuru sliced off pieces of his own flesh to sow the field.
This act of devotion impressed both Shiva and Yama, who appeared before him.
"We will grant you a boon!" the gods said.
"Grant that any man who dies here either by an act of war or an act of penance shall attain heaven," Kuru replied, and the gods granted his wish.
This was Kuru-Field, Kuru-Kshetra.
