The Gods Appeal to Vishnu

The gods complained to Vishnu about Ravana, the rakshasa king.
"Ravana seeks to enslave both earth and heaven. By means of austerities, he and his brothers have won powerful boons of protection. We cannot stop him. You alone can save us, Vishnu!"
"Ravana is protected against the gods, but not against humans and monkeys," said Vishnu. I will become incarnate as a human, the son of King Dasharatha, and my conch and my wheel, and the naga Shesha on whom I rest, will be my brothers, and you other gods will become monkeys. That is how we will defeat Ravana!"

Inspired by: The Ramayana: A Shortened Modern Prose Version by R. K. Narayan
Notes: This is on p. 4 in the book. In this version, Vashishtha knows about the heavenly plan for Vishnu's incarnation, but he does not reveal what he knows to Dasharatha. For another version, see: Rama, Son of Dasharatha.
