As Vishvamitra led Rama and Lakshmana into the wilderness, he showed them a holy place.
"Shiva was meditating here when he incinerated Kamadeva."
"Tell us more!" the brothers said.
"The gods knew that only Shiva's son could defeat the demon Tarakasura, but Shiva had no son, and he was meditating, with no time for love. They ordered Kamadeva, the Love-god, to interrupt Shiva, but Shiva opened his third eye and burned Kamadeva to ashes. Kamadeva then incarnated as Krishna's son Pradyumna, but that's another story."
"And Kartikeya was Shiva's son!" said Rama.
"Yes," said Vishvamitra. "But that's also another story."

Notes: This is on p. 10 in the book. You can read more about Kamadeva at Wikipedia. Narayan does not provide details about the story; I supplied the specifics.
