The lion decided to invite all the animals to a feast, but he did not know what to serve.
The cat offered the lion some advice. "I know what to serve!" he said.
"What's that?" asked the lion.
"Rats and mice!" replied the cat.
So the lion served up rats and mice to all the animals.
The cat was delighted. "What a wonderful feast!" he said. "I cannot imagine anything better."
The rest of the animals did not agree. "This is disgusting!" they said, and they left the feast without eating anything.
Thus the lion's great feast was a failure.
Inspired by: Mille Fabulae et Una, a collection of Latin fables that I've edited, free to read online. I am not translating the Latin here; instead, I am just telling a 100-word version of the fable.
Notes: This is fable 18 in the book, which is Perry 602. The story is from Odo of Cheriton.
