The Flying Fish

The flying fish originally had no wings.
This fish thought it was better than the other fish, though, so it prayed to Zeus, "Give me wings so I can escape my enemies in the sea!"
Zeus granted the fish's wish, but in the air the flying fish encountered birds were as fierce as any fish.
Worn out by its battles in the air, the flying fish prayed to Zeus again. "Please take back the wings!"
"You were the one who wanted the wings," said Zeus. "You expected a gift, but what you got instead was a punishment for your pride."

Inspired byMille Fabulae et Una, a collection of Latin fables that I've edited, free to read online. I am not translating the Latin here; instead, I am just telling a 100-word version of the fable.
Notes: This is fable 770 in the book, but it's not in the Perry catalog; it's from a Latin schoolbook, Spencer's Scalae Primae. You can read more about flying fish at Wikipedia.
