The gardener immediately ran to the edge of the well, trying to rescue his dog, but then he slipped and also fell into the well.
The foolish dog was convinced his master had descended into the well in order to punish him. "He's going to try to drown me!" thought the dog, so he snarled at the gardener and then bit him.
"What are you doing, you foolish dog!" screamed the gardener. "Here I am trying to save you, and you're trying to kill both yourself and to get me killed too!"
Inspired by: Mille Fabulae et Una, a collection of Latin fables that I've edited, free to read online. I am not translating the Latin here; instead, I am just telling a 100-word version of the fable.
Notes: This is fable 838 in the book, which is Perry 120.
