When the farmer saw a crane and a crow in his field, he told his son, "Give me a rock."
The crow warned the crane, and they both flew away.
The farmer guessed what happened and said, "Next time when I say 'give me bread,' give me a rock."
The birds returned the next day.
"Give me bread," the farmer said, and the crow didn't warn the crane.
The boy gave him a rock, and he hit the crane, breaking her leg.
"Why didn't you warn me?" groaned the crane.
"How could I?" replied the crow. "The farmer tricked me!"
Inspired by: Mille Fabulae et Una, a collection of Latin fables that I've edited, free to read online. I am not translating the Latin here; instead, I am just telling a 100-word version of the fable.
Notes: This is fable 476 in the book, which is Perry 298.
