There was a glass jar with a narrow neck full of candy.
A boy who loved to eat sweets put his hand down into the jar and grabbed the candy. But with his hand full, he couldn't get it back out again. He pulled as hard as he could, but to no avail, and finally he started to cry.
"You can't take it all at once," another boy explained to him, "but if you take the candy out piece by piece, you can have it all."
Greed will often end in tears.
A little bit at a time is better.
Inspired by: Mille Fabulae et Una, a collection of Latin fables that I've edited, free to read online. I am not translating the Latin here; instead, I am just telling a 100-word version of the fable.
Notes: This is fable 963 in the book, but not in Perry's catalog; I took this version from Desbillons who cites La Motte as his source.
