The Bear and his Wife

There was a bear who got into a big fight with his wife. He got so mad at her that he actually ripped her eye out.
The bear felt very bad about what he had done. Overcome with grief, he bit off his own claws so that he wouldn't be able to hurt her like that ever again.
He then went to his wife and said, "Look! I love you so much that I've bitten off my own claws."
"What's the point of that now?" she replied. "You should have done that before you ripped my eye out, not after."

Inspired byMille Fabulae et Una, a collection of Latin fables that I've edited, free to read online. I am not translating the Latin here; instead, I am just telling a 100-word version of the fable.
Notes: This is fable 134 in the book, which is not in Perry's catalog; it is a fable from Abstemius.
