The Fraudulent Fortuneteller

A fortuneteller set up his stall in the marketplace, claiming that he could tell the future. A large crowd had gathered around him, and he was engaged in various displays of supernatural power, dazzling his gullible audience.
Someone then ran up and shouted, "Thieves have broken down the door of your house and taken everything you own!"
The fortuneteller, shaken by this news, dropped everything and ran home. A skeptic in the audience then scoffed, "That man is a complete fraud! He claims to predict other people's fortunes, but he doesn't even know what's going on in his own home."

Inspired byMille Fabulae et Una, a collection of Latin fables that I've edited, free to read online. I am not translating the Latin here; instead, I am just telling a 100-word version of the fable.
Notes: This is fable 890 in the book, which is Perry 161.
