One moonless night, a waterbuck and her young ones wandered near a man's hut. The man had just whitewashed his hut, and he had left the pot of whitewash outside. In the dark, the waterbuck mother knocked over the pot, and the noise awakened the man. He rushed outside and angrily threw the pot towards the waterbuck, hitting her on the rump where the whitewash left a white circle.
This white circle turned out very useful because her young ones could see her ahead of them and follow her, even on moonless nights.
Now all waterbucks have the white circle!
Inspired by: "How the Waterbuck Got Its White Circle" in When Hippo Was Hairy by Nick Greaves, 1988.
Notes: You can read the original story online. The defassa waterbuck with the white circle on its behind is found in central Africa.
