A hunter and his dog found a deserted village; goats were in the kraal. He went to take the goats when a bird sang, "Leave that! Better things are coming!"
Then he found a kraal of sheep.
"Leave that! Better things coming!"
Then a cattle kraal.
"Leave that! Better things!"
Without warning an old woman with four teeth attacked him.
He climbed a tree.
She gnawed the tree with her teeth.
Just as the tree was about to fall, his dog jumped, grabbed her throat, and killed her.
The hunter climbed down and took home the goats, sheep, and cattle.
Inspired by: "Leave These, Better Things Are Ahead" in The Bavenda by Hugh Arthur Stayt, 1931.
Notes: You can read the original story online. In the original story, the man has several dogs: the weird old woman kills them and skins them, but the lame dog who arrives last manages to kill her.
