Anansi wanted to marry Monkey's daughter, but Monkey was against it.
"Help me!" Monkey said to Lizard.
"Call her Nennan-kennan-wid-a-turn-down-gown," said Lizard, "and make the groom guess her name."
Then Lizard told Anansi, "Her name's Nennan-kennan-wid-a-turn-down-gown."
Monkey invited suitors to guess her name.
Spider said, "Nennan-kennan-wid-a-turn-down-gown!"
So Spider and Monkey's daughter got married and had a baby.
One day Spider sang to the baby:
Lizard and Anansi fool Monkey,
Fool that Monkey good.
Monkey heard!
He grabbed the baby, killed Anansi, but then he dropped the baby.
Be careful killing spiders: you'll drop whatever's in your hand.
Inspired by: Jamaica Anansi Stories by Martha Warren Beckwith
Notes: This is story 44 in the book. Beckwith heard this story from May Ford; additional information in Beckwith's notes. In Ford's story, Anansi's wife hears the song, and then Anansi pretends he was singing other words. After that, Monkey comes and kills him.
