Satan on the Day of Resurrection

When God created Adam, he ordered the angels to bow down before Adam. All the angels bowed down, except for Satan.
On the Day of Resurrection, Satan will be called to account for the many sinners that he tempted, and Satan will say, "I only invited them to break the law; what they did was their own choice — not mine."
To save himself, he will have to bow down before Adam, which he refused to do before. And then he will say, "It was not my choice! If it had been my choice, I would have bowed the first time."

Notes: This story is on p. 25 of the book. You can read more about Iblis (Satan) at Wikipedia, which includes a section on Sufi traditions about Iblis. The idea in this anecdote that Iblis was displaying his devotion to God in refusing to bow down, as if he had received a secret commandment, one not revealed to the rest of creation.
